Threaded Studs in Power Transformers Application
Energy Applications
Power transformers are critical components in the power grid, playing a vital role in the transmission and distribution of electrical power. They are used to step-up or step-down the voltage of power to meet the needs of different applications, from residential homes to industrial facilities. Transformers are key to expand the electricity network in any region.
When attaching the different panels and structures of the transformers, there are a few challenges that manufacturers should consider:
Challenges
NELSON MPF Threaded Studs have a short, unthreaded weld base that minimizes weld flash diameter and height. They are ideal for fastening heavy gauge base materials and develop full fastener strength. Ferrules with a low profile and large diameter are used to weld MPF style studs, reducing the possibility of stud hang-up in the ferrule cavity due to misaligned gun parts.
The NELSON® Solution
MPF Threaded Studs
NELSON MPF Threaded Studs are an ideal solution for attaching parts and panels for Power Transformers
Tensile strength and load-bearing capacity
it is essential to have a reliable attachment system that withholds system performance and the weight of the units and requires minimal maintenance to ensure the longer life of the transformer.
due to the significant vibrations during operation can cause mechanical stress on the attachments.
Vibration resistance
most of these transformers are installed in harsh environments such as outdoor substations or industrial settings, where they are exposed to moisture, chemicals, and other corrosive elements.
Corrosion resistance
being able to perform the attachment from one side
Accessibility and quick assembly
Threaded stud welding is a reliable method for attaching frames and structures to transformers because it creates a high-strength connection that can withstand the weight and size of the transformer.
Threaded stud welding creates a strong and rigid connection that can resist vibrations and prevent the attachments from loosening or breaking.
Threaded stud welding can provide a corrosion-resistant attachment solution by using materials such as stainless steel or galvanized steel
Threaded stud welding creates a permanent and low-maintenance attachment that can last for the life of the transformer.
In addition to that Threaded Studs benefit from stud welding benefits including:
Complete joint penetration well where the full cross section of the stud is utilized.
Process monitoring capability ensures the same weld every time providing quality assurance
“No hole fastening” eliminates the need for drill and tap saving resources and time.
Only 1 person is needed for the job thanks to this one-sided fastening solution that is as well reachable and accessible
Reduced cost of labor – stud welding doesn’t require certified welders; it is an easy process to train on
Split second fastening reduces total installation time – from seconds per stud weld compared to minutes for traditional welding.
Nelson provides installation systems for threaded studs that combined with guns, ferrules, chucks and other accessories make the whole system an ideal solution for Energy Transformer applications

Building Construction Applications
Creating Composite-Steel Structures By Connecting Steel Beams To Concrete Slabs with Shear Connectors
Create composite steel-concrete structures that can withstand heavy loads and vibrations is key to ensure the structural stability, load-bearing capacity, and fire resistance of any buildings. These composite steel -concrete structures can be found on:
Shear connectors are a critical component in the construction of any building. They are used to connect steel beams to concrete slabs, creating a composite structure that is stronger and more stable than a steel or concrete structure alone.
Shear Connectors – The Critical Component In High-Rise Building Construction
Composite steel-concrete structures can be found at many parts of buildings including:
Foundations
Floors
Walls – Shear Walls
ROOFS
Bridge Building
Ensure structural stability
High-rise buildings must be designed to withstand lateral forces, such as wind and seismic loads, which can cause the building to sway or vibrate. Shear connectors help to create a composite structure that is more rigid and stable, reducing the risk of structural failure or collapse.
Secure load-bearing capacity
High-rise buildings are subjected to significant loads, including wind, seismic, and dead loads. Shear connectors help to transfer these loads between the steel beams and the concrete slabs, creating a composite structure that can withstand the stresses and strains of these loads.
Resistance to Fire
High-rise buildings must be designed to withstand fire, and shear connectors can help to improve the fire resistance of the structure. By creating a composite structure, the shear connectors can help to prevent the spread of fire between the steel beams and the concrete slabs, protecting the integrity of the building.
NELSON Stud Welding Shear Connectors – Reliable, Repeatable, Fast & Efficient Welding Solution
Provides structural stability and reliable anchorage thanks to a complete joint penetration well where the full cross section of the stud is utilized.
Reliable and repeatable solutions – process monitoring capability ensures the same weld every time providing quality assurance for critical construction applications.
“No hole fastening” eliminates the need for drill and tap saving resources and time. Additionally, one 1 person is needed for the job thanks to this one-sided fastening solution
